Yemi Elesho Recalls Paying Asake with Rice and Coca-Cola During Their University Struggles
Nigerian actor and content creator, Yemi Elesho recently sat down with streamer Jigan and spoke about his long time friendship with Grammy award winning artist Asake and their collaborations during their University days at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

Elesho spoke about his undergraduate years and revealed that Asake would always feature in his campus cinematography projects. As compensation, Elesho would give him a plate of rice and a bottle of coke. He said “I used to give Asake ₦700 plate of rice and a bottle of Coca-Cola as performance fee for him to feature in movies during our undergraduate days at OAU.”
Elesho emphasized their bond, calling Asake a “day one friend”. He has a lot of pictures and videos of their time together at OAU. He said “He is my very good friend. I have pictures and videos of our time together at OAU. We used to play celebrity football matches together back in the day.”
Talking about Asake’s journey to stardom, Elesho acknowledged the challenges that comes with fame. He said some of Asake’s old friends are complaining that he doesn’t reply to their messages, feeling left behind as he rise to fame. Elesho said “Asake is big and a lot of his friends are complaining that he doesn’t reply to their messages but it’s a natural thing, he can’t carry everybody along.”
He highlighted the reality of success, saying that people reassess relationships as they move to new environment and new responsibilities. He said while some may feel neglected, it’s important to understand the demands and pressures that comes with being a celebrity. Elesho’s speech is a pointer to the complexities of personal relationships amidst professional growth.
Besides Asake, Elesho also mentioned other notable figures from their university days including celebrity MC Yhemolee, content creator Jimi Agbaje, comedian Woli Arole and rapper Blaqbones. These individuals who started together at OAU have all gone on to make a name for themselves in the entertainment industry, showing the vast talent that emerged from their set.
