Abia state Governor makes History and Igbo Language compulsory in schools

Abia State governor Alex Otti has mandated that History and Igbo language be made compulsory in the state’s secondary schools effective immediately.

The government has also shut down the online portal through which interested teachers were asked to apply for employment following the expiration of the application deadline.

29,797 applications were received during the application period. However, 9,371 were shortlisted for the next selection process, where 5,000 successful ones will eventually be employed.

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, who disclosed this to reporters said 5,000 teachers are to be employed following the increase in public school enrolment.

Kanu said with the reintroduction of history, a new curriculum would be developed for it, while the Igbo language is now compulsory for primary to senior secondary pupils to make them grounded in their mother tongue.

The people of Abia state and its environs have applauded this great development. They agreed in unionism that the new generation must be taught their native language and must know the circumstances surrounding who they are and their identity.
