Bauchi Government to close schools for five weeks during Ramadan

The Bauchi State Government has announced a five-week school closure from March 1 to April 5, 2025, to allow students to observe the Ramadan fast without academic distractions.

Jalaludeen Maina, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, confirmed that the directive applies to all educational institutions, including public and private primary schools, secondary schools, and tertiary institutions. He explained that the decision aligns with the official school calendar for the 2024–2025 academic year.

According to Maina, the government aims to reduce academic pressure on students during the holy month, enabling them to focus on their religious obligations. However, this move has received mixed reactions from parents and stakeholders.

While some parents support the decision, saying it will help students observe Ramadan with ease, others worry that a prolonged break may disrupt academic activities.

Some fear that students might struggle to retain previously taught lessons, while others are concerned that it could increase the number of children who drop out of school.

“This break will allow students to focus on their religious duties without worrying about school,” one parent commented.

However, another parent disagreed, stating, “A five-week holiday is too long and may negatively affect students’ learning.”

Despite these concerns, the government has assured that the decision is in the best interest of students. Education experts in Bauchi have advised parents to ensure their children remain engaged in learning activities at home to minimize any negative impact on their studies.
