Tems (Temilade Openiyi) was born on June 11, 1995 in Lagos, Nigeria. Her dad left the family when she was 5 and she was raised by her Nigerian mom. Growing up in Ajah, Lekki, Lagos, Tems developed a love for music early on, listening to Beyoncé, Lil Wayne and Destiny’s Child.

Tems attended Dowen College in Lekki for her secondary school and later studied Economics in a university in Johannesburg, South Africa. While in school she honed her musical skills, learning to play the piano and guitar and sang in the school choir.

In 2018, Tems made the bold move to quit her digital marketing job to focus fully on her music. She taught herself music production through online tutorials and on July 18, 2018 released her debut single “Mr Rebel” which she self produced. The song got a lot of attention and marked her entry into the Nigerian music scene.
Her second single “Try Me” released on August 7, 2019 further cemented her presence in the music scene and got her more fans. In 2020, Tems got international recognition by featuring on American singer Khalid and Nigerian artist Davido on a reworked version of “Know Your Worth”. The collaboration with DJ Khlaid brought more opportunities. She also featured on Wizkid’s hit song “Essence” which got global attention and a Grammy nomination.
