Tems (Temilade Openiyi) was born on June 11, 1995 in Lagos, Nigeria. Her dad left the family when she was 5 and she was raised by her Nigerian mom. Growing up in Ajah, Lekki, Lagos, Tems developed a love for music early on, listening to Beyoncé, Lil Wayne and Destiny’s Child.

Tems attended Dowen College in Lekki for her secondary school and later studied Economics in a university in Johannesburg, South Africa. While in school she honed her musical skills, learning to play the piano and guitar and sang in the school choir.

In 2018, Tems made the bold move to quit her digital marketing job to focus fully on her music. She taught herself music production through online tutorials and on July 18, 2018 released her debut single “Mr Rebel” which she self produced.
