Tiwa Savage Biography, Background, and Net Worth

Tiwatope Omolara Savage, professionally known as Tiwa Savage, was born on February 5, 1980, in Lagos Island, Lagos, Nigeria. At 11 she moved to London with her family and music became her passion. She went to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, and graduated with a degree in professional music.

Musical Career

Tiwa started as a back up singer to big artists like George Michael and Mary J. Blige. In 2010 she returned to Nigeria to contribute to the growing Afrobeats scene. Her debut single “Kele Kele Love” released in 2010 was a big hit and established her as a force to be reckoned with in the Nigerian music industry.

In 2013 she released her debut album “Once Upon a Time” which had hits like “Eminado” and “Ife Wa Gbona”. The album showed her versatility blending Afrobeats with R&B and pop. Her sophomore album “R.E.D” released in 2015 had popular tracks like “My Darlin” and “Standing Ovation”.

Tiwa’s international recognition grew when she signed a management and publishing deal with Roc Nation in 2016 making her the first Nigerian artist to be signed to the label. She further broke barriers when she signed an exclusive global recording deal with Universal Music Group in 2019. Her third studio album “Celia” released in 2020 got critical acclaim and had features with Sam Smith and Davido.

Throughout her career Tiwa Savage has won many awards and nominations. In 2018 she made history as the first woman to win the Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards. She has also been recognized at the Headies Awards, Channel O Music Video Awards and the Nigerian Entertainment Awards among others.
