4,449 Policemen Sue IG Over Delayed Promotions
About 4,449 police officers have filed a l@wsuit against the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) over the delay in decorating them with their newly approved ranks. The officers have taken the case to the National Industrial Court in Abuja, seeking justice for what they describe as an unjustified postponement of their promotions.
The officers claim that their promotions were approved by the Police Service Commission (PSC) months ago, but despite this approval, they have not been formally decorated with their new ranks. The officers allege that the delay is causing them emotional and professional distress, as the non-declaration of their promotions hinders their career progression and financial benefits tied to their new positions.
The Police Service Commission, which is responsible for approving promotions within the police force, has confirmed that the promotions for the officers were granted well in advance. However, the officers argue that the Nigeria Police Force has failed to implement the decision by refusing to decorate them, thus leaving them in a state of limbo.
The l@wsuit, which was filed at the National Industrial Court, accuses the IGP and the Nigeria Police Force of neglect and maladministration in handling the promotion process. The affected officers are seeking compensation for the psychological and financial hardships they claim to have endured due to the delay.
According to the plaintiffs, the delay has created a sense of unfairness within the force, especially considering that the promotion process was carried out transparently by the PSC. They argue that, after years of dedicated service, they deserve to be recognized and rewarded in a timely manner, as stipulated by the policies governing promotions in the Nigeria Police Force.
The officers are now calling on the court to order the Nigeria Police Force to expedite the decoration process and implement the promotions without further delay. They also seek compensation for any losses incurred as a result of the prolonged wait.
